The Royal Akarana Yacht Club is pleased to formally announce the appointment ofย Sophia Morganย asย Academy Co-ordinator.
Many club members & parents will already know Sophia as a familiar face and respected member of our coaching team. Energetic, approachable, and committed to the development of our clubโs junior sailors, Sophia has already been part of the Academy Team for several years. Last season, she stepped up to play a key role in leading these programmes, helping to foster a strong culture for the next wave of young sailors and setting the tone in the academy for years to come.
Sophia herself has represented Fiji twice in the ILCA 6 class at the Olympic Games (2020 & 2024) and secured silver medals in both the individual and team events at the 2023 Pacific Games.
Having someone with Sophiaโs combination of racing experience and approach to sailing has been instrumental in growing our youth fleet in the last year. Her ability to translate her racing experience into focused, age-appropriate coaching has not only accelerated the skills of our young sailors but also instilled in them the values of teamwork and camaraderie. Making sure they enjoy their time on the water as well as pushing each other to keep improving.
As Academy Co-ordinator, Sophia will oversee the RAYC Academy – from ourย Sail & Playย program for beginners right through to our youth performance groups. She will be responsible for leading our coaching team, ensuring the clubs sailing programs continue to get more sailors on the water in a safe, fun environment and continuing to grow the Academy as one of New Zealandโs biggest hubs for sailing development.
Please join us in welcoming her to this new position, as we look forward to watching her grow into this role and the continued growth of our Academy under her guidance.
