Akarana has a new team member! Gavin Gilmer has been appointed as the On-Water Coordinator and is responsible for managing the on-water activities including sailing, paddling and Waka Ama events as well as ensuring our support boats are ready for each race day.
Gavin, a sailor himself for the last 30 years, moved to New Zealand two years ago with his family. Originally from Port Elizabeth in South Africa, Gavin has competed in Hobie 14’s, then 16’s an then 18’s making him a multihull enthusiast!
“New Zealand is now our home and we have no plans on leaving!”, said Gavin.
When back in South Africa, Gavin has supported disadvantaged schools and enabled youth to get into sailing and has been part of support teams for major regattas including J22 Worlds, Mirror Worlds and the 505 World Championship, so comes to the club with a wealth of knowledge.
Before taking on the role at Akarana, Gavin was a leading force in sponsorship for the Yachting New Zealand “Have a Go” program as part of his Rotary commitments. He was also a volunteer for the 2016 Youth Worlds and the World Masters Games in 2017.
Gavin is a local to our area calling Glendowie home, so it just a few tacks a gybe away from the club.
To get in touch with Gavin, use the email address firstname.lastname@example.org. He will be hanging out at the club on a regular basis, so please introduce yourself, and welcome him to the team.
