The RAYC Rugby Team

Did you know we once had a Rugby team?  Called the RAYC Sunday Sports Rugby Union Team, it was unbeaten for 4 years!  The photo, taken in 1949, shows, left to right:

Keith Peachey (Snr), Tom Sharple, “Hustor”, Joe Maches, Bill Marchall (Commodore in 1959), “Recka” Wright, Pip Waldron, “Subritsky”, Monty Dempsey (Captain), Pete Ushaw, Ron McQuarsia, Jack Potter, “Givvey” Gorden, John Whiteside and Keith Peachey (Jnr)

The photo was sent in by Jack Potter as well as a memory of those days when, after a Sunday’s sail back from Waiheke about 20 of the group would have an afternoon sitting in the cabin or on the dock singing:

“We’re sailing away from Okahu Bay
The old open sea lies ahead
Sometimes we think of all shoes on shore
But we’ll carry on ‘til we’re safely moored
On some Pacific shore!”

Do you have any memories – even more recent ones – that you’d like to share?  If so, or you have anything else you might like to give to the Archives, please contact Marian Harkness on 09-431-6332 or at  Offers to help document information for the Archives would also be appreciated – come and join the team!
