Our founder “Wilkie” Wilkinson started the 24ft linear rater class when Secretary of the North Shore Sailing Club (the beginnings of our present Club).
His Speedwell was built by Charles Bailey Jnr and launched in December 1900. She proved to be one of the most successful racing yacht of the times. The photo, by Henry Winkelmann, shows Speedwell in cruising mode. She was later owned for many years by Frank Cloke and Joe Patrick, members of this Club. Speedwell was also the pseudonym of Wilkie with his articles written for the New Zealand Herald and also for the newspaper he published, The New Zealand Yachtsman.
The Archives team is compiling biographies of such well-known Club members from different eras of the Club’s progression up to the present day. If you have anything you would like to contribute please contact Marian Harkness on (09) 524-4968 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
