Two weeks ago, three of the Sailability Auckland SKUD18s sailed down to RAYC to compete in the Winter Series racing that was taking place in Mechanics Bay. They loved the close competition of racing against the Flying 15s and are coming back to race again this weekend! Tim Dempsey and Gemma Fletcher, currently training for the IFDS World Championships in Melbourne later this year, particularly enjoyed mixing it up on the start line with the Flying 15s.
Tony Vaka, RAYC Club Sailor of the Year, also had his first outing in a SKUD. Finding the challenge of all the additional ropes, and the power of the gennaker, incredibly engaging.
This morning, three SKUD’s and their support boat had to be launched to be ready for the Sunday racing. The catch was that the crane that is normally used for hauling boats (and crews) is out of commission until next week. This meant the boats had to be launched the old-fashioned way! Steve Cranch and RAYC coach Nathan Laurie spent the morning preparing the boats, launching them and then towing them to their berth (harder than it sounds as SKUD’s don’t particularly like to be towed).
Two hours later the boats were all snug alongside the dock ready for the weekend!
