Sunday 27 January
Sunshine, an ebb-tide and an Easterly wind of 16-18 knots set the scene for the Skiff fleet Summer series II opener on Sunday. The first race used the Harbour Challenge course due to be sailed Anniversary Monday. 2 RS700s and one Musto got away from Orakei in sizeable waves with Neil McCallum tacking early back to the Mission Bay shore. This proved descisive, and he rounded Motu Korea 3 minutes ahead of Neil Sanders and Russ Evans who, having punched out to Northern Leading, rounded the first mark neck and neck.
Sanders chose an inshore route downwind, avoiding large rolling waves and the prospect of an expensive pitchpole in the middle of the harbour. This worked well and he ate into McCallum’s lead and eventually overtaking him at Orakei. Evans braved a track outside Bean Rock but the sea state dictated a conservative and costly mode.
3 gybes later found the skiffs at Resolution with 30 seconds between them and this held to the finish with Sanders first, McCallum second, Evans third.
Conditions had freshened and race two saw the left pay on a reduced windward leg to Bean Rock buoy. Evans rounded first, gybed mid channel and hooked up to a gust which almost made Resolution a lay. McCallum had a swim in the shipping lane but recovered to preserve second.
Even points all round after two races.
