RAYC Centennial Year

Highlight of our Centennial year was the visit of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh on 10 November 1995.  He presented the Duke of Edinburgh Cup to Roger Craddock and Steve Cunnold of the Flying Fifteens for their win in September of that year.

The Duke was introduced to Geoff Smale and Clive Power who were the first team to be presented with the Cup in 1952.  The photo shows HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, the Maritime Commander New Zealand, Commodore John Leonard, and Commodore Fendall Halliburton with his wife Lynne.

“Some of us can remember well the Centennial Year and the visit by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.  I actually was the Media Representative for the Club and it was my job to alert the band to start playing “God Save the Queen” As soon as the Duke entered the Mermaid Lounge.  However, with his seafaring interest, he immediately started striding towards the water as soon as it came into view so I had to frantically wave to the band.  I only just managed to get Clive Power to be there – he had forgotten in his old age and someone had to go and fetch him!” – Marian Harkness
