Over the last four days, six RAYC have been down sailing in Lyttleton at Charteris Bay Yacht Club in the 2024 Picture Starling National Championships. A predominantly windy regatta made for very tight competition and very tired legs, on the back of the three-day Optimist and Starling Auckland Champs RAYC, hosted that all of our sailors attended the weekend prior.

Louis Quere sailed a very impressive regatta and was in contention for the win right up until the final day where he ultimately finished 6th overall. With less than 10 points between him and first place Louis is showing huge potential and we are extremely excited to watch the rest of his season.

Leo Brown also finished in the top 10 following consistent top 10 race results for the light wind specialist. Leo usually excels in the lighter breeze so it was great to see him performing so confidently and showing so much potential in the 16 – 25 knot winds that we saw the majority of the regatta.

Marlon Porteous finished inside the top 20 and Bradley Perry top 30 in the 75-strong fleet. Beatrix Muir and Lachie Gillies are very recent graduates from Development to Open Fleet and they did exceptionally well, especially on the third day where we saw winds reach the upper racing limit.

Well done RAYC team, you should all be extremely proud of yourselves. A massive thank you to Nico Pini for travelling down to Lyttleton with the team. Nico was out on the water every day delivering his expert coaching knowledge to our sailors which they benefitted from immensely. And to all of the parents who helped organise RAYC’s attendance in this event and helped to tow boats and transport sailors. Thank you to Charteris Bay Yacht Club for a great event and we look forward to returning in the future.
