Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei urupā and church flooded

Our thoughts are with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei as they deal with flooding of their urupā and church on Okahu Bay. RAYC Member Sharon Hawke is interviewed by At this time we ask all members to be careful and to not take any unnecessary risks.

A message from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei:
From the footage, you will be able to see that the flooding is extensive. This is a very sad moment for us all and we are working as hard as we can with Council and private contractors at the moment to pump the water out of the cemetery. However, the only place that the water can go is into the Waitemata. It is for this reason that we have made the decision to place a rahui on Okahu Bay. Whanau, we encourage you not to swim or enter Okahu Bay until we have been able to resolve this unfortunate situation appropriately. We thank you for your support and will send you updates as they become available.
