Menace leads heading into the final regatta of the MC38 Australian Season Championship

This coming weekend the only Kiwi MC38 Menace will hit the start line for the final regatta of the MC38 Australian Season Championship.

Currently sitting just one single point ahead of John Bacon and Dark Star, Menace has a lot of work to do to maintain their small advantage.

Menace tactician Ray Davies is predicting some close racing amongst the top placed boats from the time the first warning signal is fired.

“We’ve had great racing all season with plenty of passing going on, these boats really reward good crew work so being the last regatta of the year, the teams are all getting more competitive so we are expecting tight racing once again!” said Davies.

Dark Star and us have a bit of a jump on the fleet however we have to make sure we don’t take each other out and end up deep in the pack. We have to stick to our guns but at the end of the day we have to beat Dark Star no matter what,” continued Davies.

The MC38 fleet might be small in numbers but is by no means an easy class to race well. The strict one design rules enforces the sailors to pull out every trick in their book to gain that extra knot of speed or to pick the correct shift.

“We have had a few regattas in Sydney now so we are starting to get our head around the place but there are always surprises there!! So we really have to be on our game (we have had some really close calls with the ferries!!)” continued Davies.

There are no drops for this regatta. A simple mistake or gear breakage could cost the regatta.

The Menace team is missing a core crew member, with James Dagg sidelined due to injury. Taking his place for this final event is Stewart Dodson. Alistair Gair, Nick Burridge, Danielle Bowater, Frances Spencer, Ray Davies and owner/skipper Howard Spencer, representing Royal Akarana Yacht Club, will be fighting hard for the Kiwi win.
