Saturday 20th June, Murrays Bay Sailing Club.
The fourth installment of the 2015 Junior Winter Sprint Series. Five keen young RAYC sailors made the trip to the changed venue of Murrays Bay to take on some of the best Opti sailors in New Zealand. The forecast was dubious with 40kt winds predicted from the North. The boats hit the water however and we saw some classic New Zealand sailing conditions on the race track.
Gusts up to 20kt and swells that dwarfed the small Optis proved too much for the majority of the Green Fleet sailors, after the first race there was only Oscar Little and Louis Ralph left to duke it out. Unfortunately Oscar struggled to keep the boat upright on the downwind and was persuaded ashore by coach Nathan. Though what a fantastic attitude!
That left three RAYC sailors on the water, Charlie Thomlinson, Elijah Liefting and Henry McLachlan. With the absence of his competitors, Charlie raced against the Open Fleet, guaranteed 1st place in every race he chased the tail-end of the Open Fleet and claimed a couple of scalps!
Henry struggled in the tough conditions, having first completed a rugby game his exhaustion was understandable! Elijah was racing in the pointy end of the fleet against the top 25 New Zealand Opti sailors and rounded the last mark in 7th place in the final race, unfortunately slipping to 12th by the finish line.
All-in-all a tough day on the water, but some fantastic results and experience for this building RAYC junior fleet!
