Giacomo wins the 72nd Rolex Sydney Hobart

It’s the only boat in the fleet with a huge RAYC burgee on the transom, and at 04:27:05 AM (AEST) Wednesday 28th December, Jim Delegat and his Giacomo (VOR70) crew crossed the finish line for the 72nd edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The race for Giacomo was outstanding. Being the second boat to finish in a fleet of 80 is a true testament to the way the boat was sailed. Their elapsed time was 01:15:27:05, which broke the 2012 record set by Wild Oats XI in 2012. Perpetual Loyal (100 foot yacht) are now the new race record holders, finishing at 02:31:20 AM, just just two hours ahead of Giacomo.

Giacomo has beaten pedigree yachts over the line such as Scallyway (100 foot), Maserati (VOR70), Black Jack (VOR70), Beau Geste (80 foot) and CQS (100 foot).

Watch the announcement of them winning below. Watch all the way to the end to hear Jim acknowledge RAYC as his home club.

It’s been a successful year for Giacomo. They raced a record time in the ANZ Sail Fiji Race in June finishing the 1,100 nautical mile race in 02:22:53:19.

Giacomo is now based in Sydney and will continue campaigning the east Australian races, however will still be racing for Royal Akarana Yacht Club.
