Dr Dave Austin has seen it all. The most gruesome sights, emergencies and injuries. As a sailor, Dr Dave wanted to ensure that crew members were equiped with the knowledge of dealing with an onboard emergency during any form of race, whether it be rum racing on a Friday afternoon, a coastal cruise, or a category 1 event like our Auckland to Noumea Race which starts on the 2nd June 2018.
The course is Yachting New Zealand and World Sailing approved, which means after a massive nine hour day, sailors are ready to use their new skills on the water.
The hands-on delivery of the course, accompanied with real life images of situations that may unfold, ensured the attendees never lost focus, and although the day is long, it was interesting and practical.
The qualification lasts for five years, meaning sailors can get in a lot of racing and cruising before needing to complete the course again.
Those that attended called it an “excellent course. Very well-paced, informative and enjoyable. Most importantly, practical!”
RAYC would like to thank Dr. Dave Austin and Bex Costello for volunteering their time to run this fantastic course.
