The RAYC Cruising Series is a laid back series of yacht races for sailors of all abilities that explore the best overnight anchorages in Hauraki Gulf.
For those new to sailing or racing there’s always plenty of support and advice to keep you headed in the right direction.
The series starts in late September and ends with an Easter race to one of the Gulf’s best cruising grounds. Once at anchor, it’s a chance to meet other families and sailors to share experience and knowledge over a BBQ on the beach.
Courses are designed so races are about 3-5 hours over long weekends and visit a variety of anchorages over the season. To ensure the racing is enjoyable for all the crew, courses are chosen a few days before the race and taking the journey home into consideration.
All boats race on a handicap system that ensures every boat has a chance at the prizes and winning the series. In the spirit of cruising, spinnakers are strongly not allowed and towing a dingy is a huge advantage.
Royal Akarana Yacht Club manage the series under Yacht NZ safety regulations and the series follows some basic rules of racing. Anyone unsure of how these work is buddied up with some of the more experienced sailors.
