In just a few short weeks, racing will get underway for the 2015/2016 The Boat Builders Summer Series!
This season we welcomed a new sponsor to our line up, and Joe Richardson, the main man from The Boat Builders, is excited to be involved with this seasons series.
“I have been following the direction RAYC has been taking with its youth sailing and have been really impressed at the calibre of young yachties that they are producing. The Boat Builders would love to support and be a part of the future of youth sailing at Akarana,” said Joe back in August.
The season gets underway on Sunday 18th October with the first race of the season being the infamous Ffemmy. The reigning champion fleet, the Flying 15’s will be racing to retain their season rights over the M-Class, who are hoping to win back the uniquely shaped trophy and also the right to start first for every race of the season.
In 2014 the Flying 15 sailors won the Ffemmy. The M-Class sailors want her back in 2015!
The Ffemmy is an odd tradition, but brings a lot of laughs and camaraderie to the fleets.
Also racing in The Boat Builders Summer Series are the Skiffs, a mix of Moths and RS700s as well as our new junior division. Fleets of Optimist and Fevas will also be on the start line and shows great progress with how far the club has come with the youth academy.
All the kids who will race in The Boat Builders Summer Series are current or graduate sailors from the Raye Freedman Youth Academy, which has gone ahead in leaps and bounds over the last 12 months.
The best viewing platform for the racing on Sunday 18th October will be from on the water, Orakei Wharf or from the deck of the Commodore’s Lounge at the club.
The Flying 15 Fleet will have their own “unofficial” race day to dust off the cobwebs on Sunday 4th October – perhaps they are nervous about the upcoming stand off with the M-Class sailors?!
