Dan Bernasconi, Elise Beavis, Ray Davies – you may have heard of these people. They work for the sailing team known as Emirates Team New Zealand, but on Thursday 14th February, they were Laser sailors taking part in the inaugural RAYC Laser Twilight Series.
It was a perfect summer’s night for twilight sailing, and all 20 of the clubs brand new Lasers were put to good use. The ages of those sailing ranged from 16 to 60+, including a Fijian sailor named Tom who found out about the series while working on a mega-launch in Auckland.
Three windward/leeward races were run in Mechanics Bay with competition fierce from the first waning signal.
A few OCS’s showed how eager some of those sailors were to be the first around the course, however it was silent achiever Craig Coulam who took pride and place at the top of the leader board after the first night of race.
Commodore Matt Woodley was amongst the action racing in the Full Rig division.
“It was a glamour night of RAYC Twilight Laser sailing! Three windward/leeward races with a great group of sailors, a full fleet on the water, clear blue skies and a gentle northerly in the 10 knot range. Thanks to everyone who made it happen. Turning up to rigged boats and having shore crew put the boat away after racing is absolutely fantastic. Congratulations Craig who leads the series after the first three races. It was some of the most enjoyable yachting I’ve done in a long time. Can’t wait for next weeks racing!”
The Laser Twilight Series continues on Thursday 21st February. Series and casual boat options are still available so get in and be a part of this awesome event!
