The only team representing Royal Akarana Yacht Club at the 22nd Australasian Etchells Championship in Moolooaba, Queensland, were forced to accept second place after count back. Simon Cooke, Anatole Masfen and Matt Kelway sailed their boat “Cruel Jane” at the regatta.
Masfen, mainsheet hand for the crew, said that out of all the events they have competed in, that this was the best they had sailed.
“It was a very deep fleet with 44 boats and all the top crews were there,” said Masfen.
“It was heart breaking not to win but probably our best result ever.”
“Of course it would have been nice to add the Australasian title to our Europeans, North American and multiple NZ titles, but we are happy to settle with second for this one.”
The Etchells World Championship are being held in Brisbane in October this year and Akarana will be represented. The regatta will be raced on the waters of Moreton Bay from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.
