Academy Update: Sir Peter Blake Regatta, School Holidays

We’ve had been pretty busy at the Akarana Sailing Academy with many fun activities completed, and more to come! The Race Squad had two great days at the Sir Peter Blake Regatta on the 1-2 December at Torbay Sailing Club and this week we are wrapping up Term 4 but then kick into the School Holiday Programs from Monday 10th December.

Race Squad at the Peter Blake Regatta

The Sir Peter Blake Regatta at Torbay Sailing Club was a great success for the Akarana race sailors. For many Optimist kids this was been their first regatta and for many BIC their first or second regatta in the class. Everyone had a great time, and the kids were able to show off their skills which they have learnt during Term 4 training.

Our young fleet of BIC sailors showed great performance and also learnt more skills from the big waves and different sailing conditions from what we had during the past month of training. Each sailor had a learning goal for the regatta and the majority said that they achieve that goal. That’s awesome!

The Race Squad showed a big sense of sportsmanship helping each other on land and on the water. For example, helping their team mates with their rigging on land or explaining to their friends all about the sailing instructions and the racing course. Also, when one of the sailors was feeling sick on the water he was assisted by his friends. Better results come when you work as a team. Well done!

The parental support was outstanding on and off the water. Many thanks to those parents who assisted with the team.

Petrol boat induction for parents

On Wednesday 28th November we ran a RIB parent induction to up-skill and train our Academy parents, volunteers, and helpers. We were surprised by the big amount of parents turning up so thanks to everyone who got involved. They said they had a great time and learned a lot of new skills. Many are looking to keep volunteering at the club and supporting the academy.

Boat induction

The Academy is going from strength to strength and we look forward to sharing our sailors progress with you all.
