Because we have just turned the first sod signaling the beginnings of our new Club the following is of interest. Excerpt taken from Sea Spray in an issue dated l December 1949.
£16,000 for Clubhouse at Okahu Bay
“The Auckland Harbour Board have agreed to build – at an estimated cost of £16,000 – a new clubhouse for the Royal Akarana Yacht Club at Okahu Bay. The board’s architects are going ahead with detailed plans, and tenders will soon be called. The new building will replace the club’s old headquarters adjoining the flying boat base at Mechanics’ Bay. This building will shortly be offered by the club for sale and removal.”
The Sod Turning day for the previous Club was in October 1952 and the new building was officially unveiled on 22 August 1953. Sea Spray of October 1953 mentions: “Not only was it an event in Akarana’s life but in that of yachting in Auckland, for it signified the start of a development scheme that has been held up since the beginning of the war. It will be remembered that Westhaven was finished just before the war started and that it was planned to have similar facilities at the eastern end of the harbour immediately afterwards.”
