The 29er National Championships are on this weekend in the Bay of Islands and a record number of Royal Akarana Yacht Club sailors are set to compete.
13 sailors will be on the start line in a fully stacked fleet, including our honorary life members Alex Maloney and Molly Meech who are getting back into the 29er to mix it up against a talented line up.
“We’re excited to race again in a good sized skiff fleet and it’s going to be really cool to get on the start line!” said Alex.
“Molly and I jumped back in the 29er for a bit fo a training session on Thursday and it was so much fun! It had been eight years since we sailed a 29er and the nationals is going to be a great way to connect with the up and coming skiff sailors of New Zealand,” continued Alex.
Olivia Hobbs, who was recently selected for the Akarana Youth America’s Cup Squad, is racing the 29er with Crystal Sun. The pair are normally seen in a 49erFX as training partners for Alex and Molly.
“I am most looking forward to getting into some big fleet racing. It’s so awesome to see such a big 29er fleet developing in New Zealand. I am also looking forward to jumping back into the 29er for the first time in a couple of years,” said Olivia.
“I think the competition will be great with so many boats and such a range of sailors jumping into the class for the event,” continues Olivia.
The Bay of Islands Yacht Club is hosting the three day regatta with racing kicking off today, Saturday 11 July.
Four races are scheduled for today, with another four on Sunday and three on Monday to wrap up the regatta.
Best of luck to all our competing sailors!
