124th Opening Day a Sunday session in the Sun and loads of Fun

You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for the Royal Akarana Yacht Club to celebrate the opening of the 124th Sailing Season.

The weather was textbook perfect with 10-12 knots for the sailors, and great downwind conditions for the paddlers.

A flurry of Akarana Sailing Academy kids were also part of the day, taking part in learn to sail sessions in the morning, a step-up opportunity to try new classes, and then fun racing in the afternoon.

Nicholas Wong and Bradley Perry had the honours of firing the cannon to signal the opening of the season with a big cheer from the crowd who had gathered in front of the club and at the brand new Akarana Eatery which was at capacity.

20 plus paddlers enjoyed the conditions for an informal race back to the club with a prize giving and post-race debrief in the sun.

“We had an awesome day on the water, and then we get to come back here to the Akarana Eatery and enjoy this amazing location. We have the best club in the world!” said paddling member John Cooper.

There was a Laser Challenge using the club Lasers, with Commodore Matt Woodley taking the victory after five laps around a course in Okahu Bay, right in front of the club.

“Being able to race in a clear bay in front of the club was awesome. We had heaps of Lasers out which were rigged and ready for us to use, and the conditions were the best we could have hoped for. It was just a perfect day,” said Woodley.

Flying 15’s, 18’ Skiffs, 12′ Skiffs and an RS700 took part in the opening day races with the first two races for points now on the table.

Russell Wilson, skipper of the ASCC White 18’ Skiff said, “It was an epic first day racing for ASCC white, glamour conditions and lots learnt as a new team. We’re excited about the season ahead as we gear up for the major 18’ Skiff races – what’s not to like!!”

Racing for the Akarana Series continues on Sunday 29th September. The paddlers are back on the water every Saturday and Sunday and the Akarana Sailing Academy school holiday programs and Term 4 classes are now available to book. The first race of the Gold Cup Series also kicks off this weekend with a fleet of 20 yachts and multihulls lining up to race on Saturday 28th September.
