The first day of the regatta was a tough one for both organizers and sailors alike. Difficult weather meant a lot of waiting around in the clubhouse; however spirits remained high; the kids celebrating Henry McLachlan’s 13th Birthday with a cake.
Finally after all the waiting around on shore, the signal was given for sailors to launch their boats and get out on the race track. With winds gusting up to 20 knots during some of the races, and a lumpy sea-state, it was hard going with lots of boats withdrawing from races after capsizes. At the end of the day though there were lots of smiles and the sailors were all happy with themselves and proud of the two Akarana crews sitting third and fourth respectively out of the 21 boat fleet.
Sunday dawned a very different day. Light winds and clear skies prevailed and the Akarana boats enjoyed the summery weather. Four windward-leeward races were sailed, followed by a longer race. The highlight of the day came in the third race with RAYC boats finishing first and second! At the end of an exhausting five days, the kids were exhausted from all the sailing, yet ecstatic with their achievements.
In the overall results, Elijah Liefting & Rose Dickson took out second place and Hamish McLaren alongside Henry McLachlan finished a very respectable fourth. These two Akarana crews also took out first and second place in the under 16 division, showing the fantastic skills of these young sailors coming through our club. Holly Liefting was also given a spot prize as the youngest female competitor at the event.
At the end of the week, there were all around satisfied smiles and faces hungry for more Feva racing!
As a result of the fantastic placings at the National Championships, Elijah Liefting with Rose Dickson, alongside Hamish McLaren with Henry McLachlan, will be flying the Royal Akarana Yacht Club flag at the Feva World Championships in Germany! They will be competing in a field of over 140 boats in Travemunde on the Northern border of Germany. They are currently training hard, with a minimum of three days on the water every week, under the supervision of their Coach Nathan Laurie.
Racing in Travemunde kicks off on July 20th with five days of intense racing in this fast growing class. We wish Eli, Rose, Hamish and Henry all the best in their training and for some fantastic close racing in Germany!
