Paddling: Race 2 of the Auckland Downwind Winter Series

Races 1 and 2 have seen some awesome numbers of surfski, Waka-ama and SUP paddlers take up the challenge! Last weekend we had 91 paddlers race over the Long course (17km from Te Atatu to RAYC) and Short course (7km, around Hobson Bay).

The series is based out of the Royal Akarana Club with the course dependent on the weather at the time.

If there is no wind or very light winds, a there-and-back course is planned. If there is wind however, a number of course alternatives are on offer.

There is also a ‘Star Course’ for complete beginners, with all equipment provided. Amidst great representation from the RAYC paddlers, it was a fill trifecta for the club, with Andrew Mowlem storming home to first place, Tim McLaren second and Jeremy Kugeleijn in third place for the Oceanski Long course category.

Competition was solid, with paddlers from Waiheke, New Plymouth and even Tahiti making up the numbers! For full results click here.
