The Auckland to Gisborne Yacht Race record has been smashed by V5.

Upon verification, we can announce that the 33 year old record, originally held by Urban Cowboy (Alan Robinson), was smashed by David Nathan and his V5 crew when they crossed the finish line in Gisborne in just 29 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. Urban Cowboy set a record in 1982 finishing the race in 32 hours, 40 minutes and 29 seconds.

David Nathan was all smiles when he and his crew hit the dock at Eastland Port in Gisborne and was keen to set the record straight.

“This is the sort of champagne racing you dream of when you go offshore. A bit of everything to keep it interesting but mainly perfect conditions with a good blast downwind, good company and a lot of fun in Gisborne. I’m so incredibly proud of my crew and all the hard effort they put in to make us go fast. I’m thrilled that we can go down in the history books as being the race record holder,” said Nathan.

“It was great to also win on PHRF, a true testament to how hungry the crew were to make an impression on this race,” continued Nathan.

First on IRC was the XP44 Lawless with RAYC Commodore Nathan Bonney accepting the trophy on behalf of Laurie and Terry Needham.

The Royal Akarana Yacht Club made a $500 donation to the Gisborne Yacht Club Youth Sailing division as a thank you for all their efforts to make the race a success at the finish line. Peter Millar, Vice Commodore at GYC, accepted the donation with a tear of joy.

“It’s an honour to have been involved with this race once again,” said Millar at the prize giving.
